Cut away any brown or black parts of the cactus to prevent rot from spreading. If the base of your cactus is turning brown and the stems are soft and yellow, it could be a sign of root rot. Or a cactus plant may turn brown, because of environmental stress or stressors. The cactus is still stiff though.
