Don't let the thought of cutting squash scare you. Yellow squash cooks fast so timing is very important. My squash leaves looked sort of grey silver, with no powder for a while, i found some info a while squash plants still all died after leaves turned to leather.

So i would check your watering and maybe test your soil to see if it's balanced, and if not, amend it as indicated. I have heard of squash borers but i mean this early?
